Dermaplaning: Benefits, Side Effects, and Procedure

Dermaplaning Benefits and Side Effects

In This Article

Leave it up to the beauty experts to solve just about any skin problem that prevents us from looking the best we can be – and that includes things we barely even notice! Case in point: Peach fuzz.

No, we’re not referring to Tyler The Creator’s 2018 trendy tune, nor do we mean the sweet cocktail mix of peaches and Vodka (although that does sound like the perfect summer treat right now!). This one is much less trendy and much more unfashionable to say the least. We’ll skip the guessing game and go straight to the point: Facial hair.

In the beauty world, peach fuzz is a more palatable (no pun intended!) term to describe vellus hair – those tiny, fine hair strands on our faces. If you’ve never heard it before, then you’re probably one of the lucky ones. While many people don’t notice peach fuzz on their faces (in fact, it’s only up until recently that many even realised that vellus hair was a thing!), there are some people with more obvious cases. Sure, they’re not as glaring as scars, stretch marks, or wrinkles, but peach fuzz is actually so much more than its appearance. It can lead to dry skin, clogged pores, dull complexion, and for some people, an unnerving case of acne!

How to Get Rid of Peach Fuzz

Here at Lovoir Skin Body & Beauty, we offer a dermaplaning treatment to safely and effectively remove unwanted gunk on your skin’s surface – dry skin, dead skin cells, and yup, all that peach fuzz! This article breaks down everything you need to know – the benefits, the process, the side effects, and how you can get in on all the amazing results! Let’s dive in.

What is Dermaplaning?

What is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a type of exfoliation treatment that gently removes impurities from the top layer of your skin. Using a surgical-grade scalpel, also called a dermatome, it scrapes off dead skin cells, dirt, and vellus hair. In the simplest terms, it’s like shaving your face to reveal baby-like, fresh, clean skin.

Since breaking the beauty scene just a few years ago, it has received rave reviews by skincare gurus, influencers, and even celebrities. It is a painless procedure with zero downtime and tons of benefits! Not only does it get rid of dead skin cells and facial hair, but it ultimately leads to smoother skin, a brighter complexion, and a more youthful glow – basically, healthier skin!

If you’re still apprehensive about the idea of a scalpel on your face, then perhaps a rundown of its benefits will convince you that this safe procedure deserves a try.

Dermaplaning Benefits: What Does It Do For Your Skin?

  • Gently exfoliates to remove dead skin cells
  • Removes unwanted facial hair, also known as peach fuzz
  • Eliminates dirt and excess oils
  • Addresses dull skin tone and brightens the complexion
  • Improves your skin’s appearance from acne scars, fine lines, and hyperpigmentation
  • Clears your skin to better absorb other skin treatments
  • Promotes overall smoother and healthier skin
  • And perhaps the best part about this treatment – it’s safe and non-invasive!
Dermaplaning Benefits

All that said, it’s important to understand that the success of a dermaplaning treatment is dependent on your skin condition and how it is performed. While it is generally safe (even for those with sensitive skin!), you may still experience minimal side effects as with any beauty treatment. Just keep these things in mind, and you should go through the procedure without any fears.

Dermaplaning Side Effects: What Should You Expect?

Because dermaplaning treatments are one of the safest ways to exfoliate, most people will have little to no side effects during and after a procedure. If you do, it’s usually short-lived soreness, redness, or a tingling sensation on the treatment area, which are nothing out of the ordinary and disappear within the day. For more tips on how to avoid unnecessary side effects, you can read our article on how to get the best out of dermaplaning!

Truthfully, any serious side effect from dermaplaning only happens if it is not performed or advised by a professional. These days, there are plenty of at-home kits and beauty products available that encourage you to perform the procedure yourself. While it is technically simple enough to do on your own, we must warn you against it! After all, it does involve sharp tools, and if left in untrained hands, it can do more harm than good. Plus, the procedure is so much more than just scraping your skin. Achieving the best (and safest!) results comes with expert advice, careful techniques and skincare practices that are best left to professionals (like us)! Here’s how it works:

Dermaplaning Facial Steps: How Does It Work?

  1. Our skin therapists start the dermaplaning procedure with a thorough cleanse of your face. We want to make sure that any dirt, oil, or makeup is removed for you to get the best results from our treatment.
  2. After cleansing, we’ll proceed with the scraping process. We use a surgical blade to gently scrape and exfoliate all areas of your face until just below the jaw line. This is where professional training comes in handy: We position the blade at a 45-degree angle and glide using upward strokes.
  3. Once we’ve gone through your entire face, we’ll apply a soothing and hydrating serum. This will help calm your skin and prevent any possible irritation.
  4. We’ll end the procedure by gently massaging in a moisturising cream and SPF to protect your new fresh skin!
Dermaplaning Procedure

And that’s it, you’re good to go! The entire dermaplaning procedure typically takes between 30 to 40 minutes, after which you can leave the salon without any discomfort or limitations. You’ll notice instant improvement on your skin, which you can further enhance with good skincare products or perhaps more beauty treatments. After all, dermaplaning is a form of manual exfoliation, and with your face free from dead skin cells and peace fuzz, your skin can respond better to more targeted treatments.

In that regard, we recommend exploring our holistic facial packages, wherein we combine dermaplaning with other skin rejuvenation treatments. That way, you’ll experience even better results for other skin conditions you want to address. If this sounds good to you, you can book a consultation with our skin therapists, and we’ll be sure to recommend the best treatment plan for your skin concern!

Before we end this article, we’ll leave you with some things you should consider before you proceed with booking your treatment with us. If you find that dermaplaning may not be your best option, we can suggest other beauty treatments that may be more suitable for you. Either way, there is always a solution when it comes to improving your skin!

Dermaplaning Myths & FAQs

Is dermaplaning the same as shaving?

Now, some of you may be thinking: Can’t you just shave off your vellus hair just like you would with unwanted hair in your body?

While it may seem like an intuitive solution, facial skin is very sensitive, and rubbing a razor against it can lead to problems much worse than peach fuzz. Cuts and scars are scary enough, what more when faced with the bacteria from your razor!

That said, the answer is no – dermaplaning is not the same as shaving. And shaving should never be the solution for removing peach fuzz.

Does dermaplaning hurt?

No it doesn’t – IF done the right way and by the right people!

Sure, the scalpel may seem daunting, but with an experienced aesthetician, these careful techniques are painless. In fact, some people actually find it quite soothing!

Is dermaplaning safe for everyone?

We usually don’t recommend dermaplaning for people who suffer from inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema, sunburn, rosacea, moderate to severe acne (or cystic acne), cold sores, and psoriasis. Also, if you are under medication to treat your skin, the best practice would be to wait at least six months before getting a dermaplaning procedure. Again, we’re just a call away to give you better options!

Does dermaplaning cause more hair growth?

Definitely not! We can understand why this myth may make sense, but we assure you that you will not be sporting a beard once your hair grows back. This hair removal method does not lead to thicker or faster hair growth. On the contrary, your fine vellus hairs will grow back exactly the way they were.

Dermaplaning Myths

Will dermaplaning aggravate my skin problems?

This is another myth commonly associated with dermaplaning – more specifically, its scalpel! Some people assume that it can lead to aggravated cases of dark spots and acne scars, but that shouldn’t be a concern if professionals are in the picture.

In our case, we always start with an assessment of a customer’s skin condition to see if dermaplaning is indeed the right solution. If not, you can count on us to be honest and suggest a better treatment. To put your hesitations to rest, you can read up on our article about dermaplaning for acne scars

Can I combine dermaplaning with other skincare treatments?

Most certainly – in fact, we encourage you to do so! As we mentioned, exfoliation through dermaplaning will allow your skin to respond better to other beauty treatments. You can combine them with facials, and even chemical peels! Just be sure to consult our skin therapists first so we can suggest a suitable plan.
