A lot of women are looking for a way to enhance their eyebrows without using makeup – and henna is a popular solution. Henna eyebrows are a great way to get fuller and thicker brows that look natural, with less upkeep than traditional eyebrow makeup.
But how does henna tinting work, and how long does it last? If you’re considering giving henna brows a try, this guide has answers to frequently asked questions about the procedure.
What are Henna Eyebrows?
Henna brows are the product of an eyebrow tinting procedure that uses a special dye to leave a pigment on the skin beneath the brow hairs.
Henna is a natural type of dye that’s derived from a plant called hina (henna tree), which has origins that go as far back as the ancient Egyptian times when it was used for body art, to colour fabrics and hair, and even applied as makeup. Its leaves are dried and crushed into powder form to be used for various staining purposes. The dye is temporary and can last for several weeks, depending on the strength.
Applying henna to the eyebrows is very similar to the traditional Indian colouring methods we see up to this day. Henna tints, however, are formulated differently to be appropriate for eyebrow tones and to look as natural as possible.
Henna Brow Dye vs Regular Eyebrow Tinting
Both henna and regular brow tints are semi-permanent, but they are different in many ways. Brow tints tend to have a softer hue, making them perfect for those who want only a subtle change in their look. Meanwhile, henna brows have a deeper, more defined, and noticeable finish.
If you want to create an illusion of fullness on your brows, henna would be the better option. In addition, in terms of longevity, henna brows can last for a week or two longer than a regular tint.
If you’re unsure about whether regular tinting or henna is the better option, consult your beauty therapist to determine what will work beautifully with your unique needs.
What Happens During a Henna Brow Procedure?
What does a henna brow process involve, you ask? We’ve done this procedure many times at Lovoir Skin Body & Body that we know it like the back of our hands. Here’s the rundown of what to expect while you’re in session. You normall have the option to schedule a patch test 24 to 48 hours beforehand to find out if you’re concerned that your would have any reactions to the product — also such reactions are very rare.
We offer a free patch test 24 hours before or the client can opt on the day to not have it done. Regardless of the time, clients always sign a waiver.
When you’re ready to begin, the therapist will sculpt the brow line into a preferred shape that will complement your face shape.
Sculpting will involve either tweezing, waxing, or threading. The goal at this stage is to get rid of the stray hairs and clean up your brow area to prepare it for tinting later. Once the area is prepped, the next step is to choose a suitable henna shade to use.
The henna powder will then be mixed with an activator to create a paste, which is what will be applied to your pre-shaped brows. Prior to applying the tint, the therapist makes an outline around the shape of your brows to function as a barrier that prevents the pigment from accidentally colouring the skin where it shouldn’t.
The henna dye is allowed to soak for about 10 to 20 minutes to enable the pigment to set on the skin. After this process, the dye is wiped off from the brow and any touchups are done, if at all necessary.
Aftercare for Henna Brows
Aftercare procedures for henna brows vary little from one salon to another, primarily because henna is relatively low-maintenance. Here are the typical aftercare procedures that follow a brow treatment.
- Do not rub the treated area.
- Avoid swimming, sunbathing, perfumed products, and heat treatments for at least 24 hours.
- Try not to use makeup on your brows for 24 hours.
- While removing your makeup, be careful not to go over the newly treated area.
- Oil-based makeup removers can also cause the tint to fade more quickly, so avoid these as well throughout the life of your henna eyebrows.
Your clinician will provide a more detailed set of aftercare instructions after the eyebrow tinting procedure, which you must follow religiously to enjoy the full benefits of your newly filled brows.
How Long Henna Brows Last
Henna brows typically last up to six weeks depending on the intensity of the dye used, your aftercare habits, and your skin type. Those with dryer complexion tend to keep their henna eyebrows on longer than those with oily skin. Henna is semi-permanent, so its colour will fade along with frequent face washes, exposure to makeup removers, and the natural shedding of the skin.
Because the skin naturally releases oils and renews cells daily, henna pigments on those with hyperactive and oily skin will fade faster. If you have skin conditions like eczema, dermatitis, or psoriasis, expect your henna eyebrows to fade more quickly, as well. In general, ahenna brow tint can stain the skin for one to two weeks, while the dye on the brow hair can go for as long as six weeks.
How Often Can You Use Henna on Brows?
While henna colouring is a relatively safe procedure, remember that it’s still a dye that can affect the skin when used too often. If applied incorrectly and for too many times, it can cause skin dryness and hair follicle damage.
The side effects can be exacerbated if you have sensitive skin. When this happens, pause on getting the procedure done for a while so that your skin can fully recover and your hairs can breathe again before getting another one done (hopefully, this time, by an experienced beauty therapist).
Ideally, you can give brows some breathing space of at least two weeks between henna tinting sessions. While it’s certainly no fun going around with fading eyebrows, you can make a small sacrifice of using a brow pencil, gel, or another type of brow makeup in the meantime.
Note that a fading henna colour means that your skin is healthy and regenerating, so take that as a good sign of brow health. If you’re unsure about when the best time for another henna session would be, consult your beauty therapist for expert advice.
Where To Go for Proper Henna Brow Tinting
How long henna brows last depends on the kind of tint and colour intensity applied, your skin type, and your maintenance and aftercare processes. But all these will be for naught if the application process itself is incorrect. A successful henna brow process involves the right tools, experience, and expertise.
