How Does IPL Skin Rejuvenation Work?
IPL isn’t a laser treatment, even though it’s similar. Unlike lasers, which deliver a steady beam of a single wavelength to the skin, IPL treatments produce light of multiple wavelengths that is more scattered and less focused than a laser. Also, IPL treatments penetrate to the second layer of your skin (dermis) without harming the top layer (epidermis), so it causes less damage to your skin.
The red or brown pigmentation absorbs the light energy, which passes through the skin. That breaks up dark pigmentation and promotes the growth of new collagen and elastin for firmer skin. The body’s natural processes then remove the injured tissue giving the skin a more even and youthful appearance. Different wavelengths are used to target specific conditions in addition to hyperpigmentation.
IPL for Pigmentation
Intense Pulsed Light is effective for treating many types of pigmentation or sun spots and can be removed with just 1 – 3 treatments, depending on the severity. The cooled hand piece increases client comfort and minimizes adverse skin reactions that can occur. The Intense Pulsed Light is selectively absorbed by the pigmented spots on your skin. Soon after treatment the spots will darken. Over the next few weeks the darkened spots will fade and some will flake off – don’t pick these off or use any abrasive cleanser or exfoliants. Any future sun exposure without suitable protection will make pigmentation spots darker over time.
IPL for Vein Reduction
Intense Pulsed Light treats a broad range of vessels, particularly spider veins, broken capillaries (or telangiectasia). Results may be seen after your first treatment but a possible 6 or more may be required depending on the severity. It works by delivering pulses of light energy which causes blood within the vein to coagulate, eventually destroying the vessel which is later re-absorbed by your body and blood flow will be redirected. All healing takes place below the skin surface. A slight reddening and local swelling of the skin may appear but this will subside within 24 hours. It is recommended not to take hot baths or showers or do gym activities for 12 hours after treatment as blood must not be pumped through the vessel. Extreme weather conditions (going from hot to cold temperatures), excessive smoking or drinking or eating hot spicy foods could cause new vessels to appear over time.
IPL for Acne
Intense Pulsed Light can help bad acne lesions by reducing over growth of bacteria and speeding up skin healing. The number of treatments will depend on the severity of congestion. Best results are achieved with combined IPL treatments and a tailor made skin care program.

Frequently Asked Questions
Want to know more about IPL?
What does intense pulse light do?
IPL is otherwise known as Photofacials and Photo Rejuvenation
Intense Pulsed Light or IPL Skin Rejuvenation is indicated for the cosmetic reduction of sun-induced skin damage and aging, including superficial pigmentation (brown spots), telangiectasias (commonly referred to as broken blood vessels). IPL can also be used to improve acne and reduce background facial redness.
Are there side effects from having IPL?
The biggest concern with any light therapy is causing burns, and possibly scars. This is why we insist on a pre-treatment consultation regardless of if you have had IPL treatments previously. This identifies any risk factors before you start any treatment. A particularly important factor is determining your Fitzpatrick skin type, which indicates how much melanin is in your skin. Darker skins are not appropriate for IPL and neither is tanned skin (fake or sun-induced). In both instances, too much light will be absorbed by the very surface of the skin and converted into heat causing burning blistering, and possibly long-term scarring. Strict sun protection is a non-negotiable after treatment, so it is much safer to have treatment in the less sunny months.
Most people will be a bit red and feel quite warm in the treated area for a few hours afterward. Any brown spots treated will most likely get darker and then flake off over the next (5 – 14 days). Some minor bruising is possible following red vein treatment.
Prior to treatment: Before undergoing IPL treatment for pigmentation and sun spots it is recommended to have had a recent skin check within the last 6-12 months. If you have not had the areas of concern checked by your GP, Mole Map, or other skin scanning centre, we may ask you to proceed with booking a skin check before we can perform any treatment.
Is Intense Pulsed Light painful?
It can be a little uncomfortable. The sensation felt during IPL is that of heat and has been likened to a rubber band being snapped on the skin’s surface.
How long does it take to see results from IPL Skin Rejuvenation?
With your first and subsequent IPL treatments, improvement is most noticeable starting about a week after each session. You’ll see the greatest results after 3 to 6 months if you do a series of IPL treatments spaced out about a month apart for each session. Results can vary from session to session, but the goal is steady progress. We schedule your therapy appointments about a month apart because skin cells turn over every 30 days or so. This gives your skin time to recover and produce naturally skin-smoothing collagen, which is one of the great advantages of IPL therapy.
The reason you should plan for at least four treatments is that each IPL session builds on the progress of the previous session. Over time, this non-invasive cosmetic procedure builds upon each session to produce clearer, more evenly toned skin.
