About Fendalton, Christchurch

Fendalton, a suburb in Christchurch, is located on the South Island of New Zealand. It is one of the oldest residential areas in the city and has earned a reputation for being one of the country’s most well-to-do, refined suburbs. It is located to the west of city centre, near the University of Canterbury At Ilam and major retail area of Riccarton. It is located close to the Christchurch International Airport, which is to the northwest.

Fendalton has many significant historic buildings. These include examples of different styles of homestead. These include St Barnabas Church in Daresbury and Los Angeles. This bungalow was one of the first California bungalows to be constructed in New Zealand.

The suburb is home to Christchurch Boys’ High school, a high school. It has 1360 students and boarding facilities. The school was established in 1881 and moved to its current location in 1926. The Christchurch Girls’ High school catchment area includes a lot of Fendalton. However, the school is located in Riccarton. Cobham Intermediate School is the local intermediate school. Fendalton’s primary school is Fendalton OPEN AIR SCHOOL, formerly Clyde Road Primary School. It is home to 407. It was opened in 1875.

Fendalton was initially known as Fendall Town. It was named after Walpole Chesshyre Fendall (1830-1913). Fendall emigrated to Yorkshire in 1850, and took over land north of Waimairi Stream. Fendall Town was quickly applied to the area north of Hagley Park. It extended as far as the current location of Christchurch International Airport. Also included were portions of Burnside and Bryndwr. Fendalton was home to many of the early buildings that were built in Christchurch. This included an early flour mill on the Fendalton Road.

Fendalton, New Zealand had a population estimate of 4,515 based on the 2018 census. The ethnicities of Fendalton were 84.2% European/Pakeha; 3.9% Maori; 1.2% Pacific peoples; 14.0% Asian and 1.7% other ethnicities (totals are higher than 100 because people can identify with multiple ethnicities).
