About Harewood, Christchurch
Harewood, a suburb in the north of Christchurch, New Zealand. State Highway 1 divides the suburb, with Harewood’s main residential area to the east and its industrial areas west.
Harewood is home to the Christchurch International Airport, which is located within the suburb. State Highway 1 also passes through the suburb. It is the second busiest airport in New Zealand, after Auckland Airport. In 2019, Harewood saw 6.9 million passengers. Harewood is home to many industrial and freight businesses, as well as campervan and rental car companies.
Harewood also houses the International Antarctic Centre. This major tourist attraction in Christchurch is centered on Harewood’s role as a departure point for many National Antarctic Programmes. This centre, which was established in 1990, houses the administration offices for the New Zealand, United States, and Italian Antarctic programs, as well as many other Antarctic-focused attractions. Tourists can sometimes ride in Hagglund armored vehicles around the Centre.
