About St. Albans, Christchurch

St Albans, a large suburb in the inner-northern part of Christchurch, New Zealand is located north of Christchurch Central Business District.
St Albans was originally a working-class settlement. It was an independent borough between 1881 and 1903. Then, it became part of Christchurch City. St Albans was named for George Dickinson’s farm to the south of St Albans Creek. His farm was named St Albans to honor Harriet Mellon, his cousin, and actress who became the Duchess de St Albans.

St Albans, which has a population of 13,137 in 2018, is the second-largest suburb in the city. It is home to one of the largest and most varied residential areas in Christchurch. There are many different housing types, densities, and housing ages. There are many options: old, low-density cottages for workers or large estates with low density.

Edgeware Village, on Edgeware Road, is the hub of St Albans. It contains a few well-supported shops. Three parks are the main ones in the suburb: St Albans Park and Abberley Park. English Park, the stadium of Canterbury United Football Club, and Rugby Park are the main sports facilities. Rugby Park is the home of the Crusaders professional Rugby union team.

Two primary schools are also located in the suburb, St Albans Primary School (Catholic School) and St Albans Catholic School (Primary School). Both offer education for students aged 1 through 6. They have respective rolls of 498 students and 100 students as of March 2022. St Albans School was opened in 1873, and St Albans Catholic School in 1955.

St Albans is well-known for its community spirit and sense of unity. It is evident in the St Albans Neighbourhood News local newspaper, which was founded by a group local residents in 1993. The paper continues to be published today under the name St Albans News. It is distributed to approximately 5,000 homes and businesses.
