About Ilam, Christchurch
Ilam, a suburb in Christchurch, New Zealand is located five kilometres west from the city center. It is adjacent to the Christchurch International Airport and State Highway 1. It is easily accessible for transport. It is located near Riccarton’s major shopping area.
The University of Canterbury is located in Ilam. Ilam Primary School, Westburn School and Medbury School are just a few of the other schools. Ilam Primary School is also on Ilam Road. It is located next to Canterbury University, whose facilities the school utilizes. Many international students attend the school. It has a total of 363. The Ilam School is where the classes of the Canterbury Japanese Supplementary School (a weekend Japanese school) are held. The state coeducational, full-primary school Westburn School (years 1-8) has a total of 459. It was established in 1961. Medbury School, a private primary school for boys (years 1-8), has a total of 408. It was founded in 1923.
Ilam was named for the ancestral home of the Hon. John Watts-Russell (1825-1875), who was originally from Ilam Hall, Staffordshire, England. In 1850, he settled in Canterbury. He arrived on Sir George Seymour. His property was named Ilam. Henry Rainsford Hulme, the Canterbury College rector, lived in the Ilam homestead until the 1950s. The homestead was made famous in 1954 when Hulme’s 16-year-old daughter Juliet was implicated in the Parker-Hulme case. Peter Jackson used the homestead as a key location in Heavenly Creatures, his film about the murders. Since 1971, the University of Canterbury Staff Club has lived on the homestead.
Ilam was home to 9,357 people at the 2018 New Zealand census. The ethnicities of Ilam were 67.8% European/Pakeha; 5.9% Maori; 2.3% Pacific peoples; and 3.2% other ethnicities (totals may exceed 100% as people can identify with multiple ethnicities).
